2018 London Petanque Championship

Saturday 9th of June dawned bright and warm as London was sliding toward what would become the ‘2018 Heat Wave’. Undaunted, two separate teams with Bedouins made their way to Crystal Palace for the international London Petanque Championship.
The morning consisted of groups of 4-teams drawn at random playing 2-3 games to see who would go into the afternoon knock-out Gold, Silver, Bronze and Plate divisions. First up in the morning for the Frosty, Tony V & Antoine Bedouins team was against a Belgian side that included 2015 World Champion Claudy Weibel! The boys gave them a run and managed to score 4-points before succumbing! They won their second & third match in the group and went into the Silver knock-out group where they lost to a team of New Yorkers from Brooklyn. Here’s a nice group photo of the Bedouins team with Claudy.
Bedouin Texas Mike played in a team with Christine & Frank from Oxshott. Their morning group included a top-notch Netherlands team & one made up of 3-UK International Team Players. First up was against the UKI’s. It was tied through 8 but, alas, the UKI’s pulled away after some sweat and sweet shooting. Second game was won handily against another local side and then a return match against the UKI’s to determine who went into the Silver & Bronze knock-out groups. It was again a pitched battle played to 7-7 when again the UKI’s superior shooting managed the win. Congrats to the UKI team as they went on to win the Silver Cup Championship in the afternoon knock-out. Mike’s team played against played a side from Poland in the afternoon Bronze Cup. It was all even through 10-10 before being knocked out.
All-in-all a great day of Petanque with good weather, a tough terrain and a fine job of organizing by the London Petanque Club. . . There are not many sports where the every day club player can enter a competition and match skills with some of the top players in the world!
